Teaching Observation

1.1 Their Planning for Teaching

The English teachers hold a meeting every week for updates and discussion on related activities. The meeting also includes their classes and the problems they have encountered so far in their lessons. With this, the teachers will come up cohesive solutions in each other’s encounters making it a wholesome working space.

1.2 Their preparing lessons and materials

In making distinct lesson plans, teachers dedicate hours in preparing. It takes one to two days usually for a teacher in Kesatuan Bangsa to finish all of her lesson plans. They are so dedicated in giving a quality lesson for their students. They first diagnose their students in distinguishing their current English-related abilities so that the teachers can either escalate or revisit a lesson in order to match the students to the school’s standards. With this, they prepare lessons with activities for them to retain and practice their skills in the English Language.

1.3 Their teaching in class

1. English teachers greet their class in English and in Bahasa;

2. Classes are only 40-minutes long and there are in-between breaks during 2 periods classes;

3. Lessons are book-based. Teachers usually follow the procedures found in the book;

4. Classes have to be interactive since it is important to practice a foreign language;

5. They have their examinations/assessments online;

6. Their books are full of listening activities;

7. Teachers are very attendant to student’s needs;

8. Male and female students are separated;

9. Teachers are so patient and gentle towards their students but stern when it comes to disciplining them just like a parent;

10. Teachers have good knowledge in employing technology inside the classroom.

1.4 Their measurement and evaluation

Teachers in Kesatuan Bangsa promote a paper-less waste environment by engaging their students in answering their assessments online. With  this, the teacher can easily get their results in an instant which saves time and effort. The passing percentage in their evaluations is 75%. Students with scores lower than 75% will receive a remedial or an intervention class during non-school hours.

1.5 My overall impression to the teacher performances

Teaching is such a crucial role, one that not many teachers can easily handled. But the teachers in KBS handled it very well. They acted like the parents of the students since it is a boarding school, students don’t get to see their parents often but at least they have good teachers.

Although the teachers have the skills when it comes to employing 21st Century Learning, they tend to loyally follow the process of the book. This overlooks their opportunity to be more creative in giving interactive lessons. Nevertheless, they give good discussions making sure their students are learning from them and from each other.
